Sonam Zamir

PHD student

Kath Maguire

I am a PenCLAHRC (linked with the National Institute of Health Research) funded student looking into how the use of video-calls (telepresence robots) can help prevent loneliness and social isolation for care home residents at risk of cognitive decline. I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology, and an MSc in Psychology, health and behaviour from Brunel University London.
My current PHD project involves liaising with a number of stakeholders to promote the use of video-calls among older people. I am currently working with a number of care homes in Devon where residents are successfully using Skype to stay better connected with distant relatives. I am at present piloting my intervention (video-calls via Skype) through collaborative action research, taking a mixed methods approach.

The overall outcome of my project will be a pilot cluster randomised controlled trial of the use of video-calls within care homes.
