Staff Profile

Professor Christabel Owens

Associate Professor of Public Mental Health

Kath Maguire

I am a social scientist, specialising in the study of suicide and its prevention. I am interested in the development and evaluation of community-based, as opposed to clinically-based, suicide prevention programmes and in supporting local authority public health teams to develop and implement effective local suicide prevention strategies.  Previous PenCLAHRC-supported work has been highly influential in informing national policy and local public health practice.

I work closely with public health teams at Devon County Council, Torbay Council and elsewhere in England, as well as with the voluntary sector. I have built strong partnerships with Samaritans, PAPYRUS (Prevention of Young Suicide), SANE, CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide and Harmless, and act as permanent scientific advisor to The Alliance of Suicide Prevention Charities (TASC).
