Staff Profile

Professor Adrian H. Taylor

Associate Dean of Research, University of Plymouth Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

Kath Maguire

In April 2017, Adrian was appointed as Associate Dean for Research in PUPSMD, his role for the next 3 years. This reflects the growing strength and interest in health services research, both within PUPSMD but also across the University of Plymouth. Within PUPSMD, working with colleagues in the newly launched Community and Primary Care Research Group, the Peninsula Clinical Trials Unit, and the Medical Statistics group, they have been successful with NIHR bids worth over £7m to investigate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of complex interventions which aim to reduce health inequalities, and support those with complex health care needs.

Adrian has, for over 25 years, developed evidence-based healthy living interventions, and conducted rigorous evaluations involving specific populations with long-term chronic conditions such as depression, COPD, nicotine and other addictions, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and Parkinson’s disease.

He co-led the NHS guidelines for GP exercise referral schemes in 1990, and is currently leading externally funded clinical trials and public health interventions valued over £4m. He has published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters and co-founded the international journal, Mental Health & Physical Activity in 2008. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
