In 2018 PenCLAHRC launched a second round of the Health Service Modelling Associates (HSMA) Programme called HSMA 2. This is a joint initiative between PenCLAHRC and the South West Academic Health Science Network (SW AHSN) and is run by PenCHORD, PenCLAHRC’s Operational Research team.
Key improvements to expand the reach of the programme were made, by increasing the number of Associates to 26 and splitting the programme into two distinct phases.
On 6 December 2017 the HSMA 2018 Open Day was held. This was an opportunity for prospective HSMAs to learn more about the programme, and hear first-hand experiences from HSMAs from the first round of the programme, and meet the PenCHORD team and discuss potential project ideas with them.
Phase 1, Foundations of Health Service Modelling, took a cohort of 26 Associates through three months of training (Jan 2018 – Mar 2018) and project proposal development. Participants received training in Operational Research concepts, pathway modelling, geographic modelling and visualisation, 'soft' skills (such as meeting facilitation and engaging with stakeholders), problem structuring and implementation planning.
Training was spread across six days in the three month period. During this phase, participants were supported to develop a project proposal to pursue in Phase 2. A subset of the Phase 1 participants were selected to proceed to Phase 2, in which they will undertake their proposed modelling project.

Those Associates selected to progress to Phase 2 received advanced simulation development training to support them with their projects. They were released by their employers for one day a week for nine months to undertake their modelling projects with the support of their PenCHORD mentors.
Fifteen Associates from ten organisations, working on ten different projects, were selected to progress to Phase 2. Four further Associates were selected to become Honorary HSMAs and were invited to attend all further training sessions and Learning Set meetings, but not receive direct mentoring from PenCHORD. In total, 19 Associates from 12 organisations continued into Phase 2.

In the first round of the programme, our HSMA projects led to multi-million pound business cases, significant improvements to A&E, mental health and discharge pathways, and a number of our HSMAs were promoted within their organisations.
