A basic understanding of Excel is a requirement for the Modelling in Health and Social Care Course. This hands-on half day training course serves to ensure that students of subsequent modules are sufficiently familiar with the necessary Excel skills to produce simple models in Excel. The skills learnt will also help attendees to improve their day-to-day efficiency with Excel-based tasks. The assessment element is designed to ensure sufficient competence for subsequent modules.

 

Part 1 : Introduction to Excel Skills for Modelling (Taught component, with practical exercises)

  • Working with numbers (SUM, COUNT and AVERAGE functions)
  • Sorting and Filtering Data
  • Cell referencing and cell referencing functions (Absolute and relative cell referencing)
  • Lookup (VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP)
  • Conditional functions (IF statements, conditional COUNT, SUM and AVERAGE functions, NOT function)
  • Named ranges
  • Recognising and handling common errors (#DIV/0!, #REF!, #VALUE!, #N/A!)
  • Understanding Pivot Tables – A Brief Introduction
  • Displaying outputs (graphs), and good spreadsheet design

 

Part 2 : Practice Session and Formative Assessment

This session allows students to practice the skills they have been taught in Part 1 via a series of exercises, with support available for queries. These exercises also represent a formative assessment for the module.

 

By the end of the module, students will have the requisite practical Excel skills to undertake Module 1 : Introduction to Excel-Based Modelling in Health and Social Care.
